Emma Aiken

Artist Statement:

Nature is the biggest inspiration for my work, whether it be in the form of scientifically realistic paintings of insects or a mythical creature growing maidenhair ferns as horns. I enjoy mixing imagination and reality together to create colorful and detailed work. I use watercolors and pens as my main mediums but enjoy mixing in other aspects like collage, acrylics, woodburning, and ink. I create my art to release my emotions, to meditate and clear my head. I enjoy sharing my art, because I believe creativity is what makes us human and I want to start a creative ricochet by inspiring others.

Artist Bio:

My name is Emma Aiken, I’ve grown up in western Massachusetts my whole life, near the shining waters of the Quabbin Reservoir. Living with so much boundless nature around me has been a constant inspiration for as long as I can remember. I started drawing when I was little and haven’t stopped since. I love drawing finely detailed flora, fauna, and mythical creatures from my imagination, using watercolor to wash vivid colors across the paper. I’ve explored other mediums throughout my life, including rock pendants and macrame, acrylic, digital art, and collage, but I always come back to my comfort of watercolor and fineliner pens.

I find art meditative and a beautiful way of letting go and flowing forwards, letting my pens and brushes lead the way. I have a passion for travel and nature journaling with my art telling the stories of my adventures.

I’m currently the Artist in Residence for the New England Scenic trail where I’m creating intricate nature journals, teaching workshops, making zines, and holding a gallery in the fall. With my residency I hope to teach that art can be accessible, anyone can do it, and it can strengthen your connection with our native woodlands.

As a self taught budding young artist, I’m very excited to keep on creating and learning, pulling inspiration from life as I move through it.
